Dr. William "Warren" Britt, MD 1876-1962
Dr. W. Warren Britt gave more that a half century of service to Tonawandans as a family physician, a title he was proud to claim and which he substantiated unfailingly in his practice. His willingness to serve under this title in an age when specialization became the vogue, his concern for the patient as a person, and his continuing efforts to make use of the new techniques and discoveries of a rapidly progressing science, place many generations of Tonawandans in his debt.
Tributes came to Dr. Britt in his lifetime in the form of recognition by his professional colleagues. He had headed the Erie County Medical Society and was an officer in the New York State Medical Society, the latter citing him in 1956 for 50 years of medical service. Two years before that, his associates on the DeGraff Memorial Hospital Medical Staff recognized his long service with a special tribute. It remains now for the community to express its gratitude for his service, but as in so many cases, this comes too late for him to accept the expressions of appreciation. Dr. Britt died Friday at the age of 86.
Certainly part of Dr. Britt's legacy to the community is represented by his two sons, who followed him into the medical profession and practice in the Tonawandas. To them, and to the other members of his family, we offer the thought that the community shares their loss. Thousands of its members over the years were helped and healed through his skilled and compassionate attention. They testify to his lifetime of valuable works.
Served as an Elder of the First Presbyterian Church and a 60-year member of the Masonic Lodge 247, F & AM, member of the Gross Medical Club, Shakespeare Club, Medical Assoc., Erie County Medical Society.
